Florida Fair Housing Act
The Florida Fair Housing Act, Chapter 760 of the Florida Statutes, prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, financing, and provision of housing based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or familial status. It also establishes the powers and duties of the Florida Commission on Human Relations and the enforcement mechanisms for violations of the act1.
Under this act, it is against the law to:
-
Refuse to rent or sell housing based on the aforementioned protected characteristics.
-
Falsely deny that housing is available for inspection, rental, or sale.
-
Refuse to make a mortgage loan or impose different conditions or terms on a loan based on discriminatory intent.
-
Threaten, coerce, or intimidate any individual exercising a fair housing right.
-
Refuse reasonable changes to a dwelling to accommodate a disability.
Individuals who believe they have been victims of an illegal housing practice may file a complaint with the Florida Commission on Human Relations or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)2. The Commission investigates housing discrimination inquiries under the Florida Fair Housing Act and works cooperatively with HUD
